Research interests focus on understanding the development of delinquency and crime over the life course, young adult anti-social behavior, and research methods.
Professor Thornberry is a former Dean at the School of Criminal Justice, University at Albany, State University of New York. Before moving to Albany, he was a Faculty Member at the University of Georgia and the University of Pennsylvania. Professor Thornberry received his master's degree in Criminology and his doctorate in Sociology from the University of Pennsylvania. He is the author of a number of books, including The Criminally Insane and From Boy to Man -- From Delinquency to Crime, and numerous articles and book chapters. Professor Thornberry is currently the Director of the Rochester Youth Development Study, an ongoing panel study examining the causes and correlates of serious delinquency and drug use.
Professor Thornberry is the recipient of numerous awards, including the American Bar Association's Gavel Award Certificate of Merit and the President's Award for Excellence in Research at the University at Albany. He is also a Fellow of the American Society of Criminology.
