This 2-day workshop introduces participants to the basics of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) with an emphasis on data acquisition, basic mapping, and simple analysis. Topics include:
- geographic data formats and sources (e.g. census data, national and international borders)
- projections, mapping lat/long coordinate data
- choropleth mapping
- spatial joins
- map queries
- raster data and spatial overlays/joins
We will use ESRI's ArcGIS10 software; no prior experience with GIS is required.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own data sets (e.g. survey data with lat/lon coordinates) with which to work.
