SPACE Spatial Population Analysis: Colorado Extension Jani S. Little Institute of Behavioral Science University of Colorado 303-492-4179 littlejs@rastro.colorado.edu GENERAL DESCRIPTION The mathematics of spatial demographic analysis as set forth in this book have been implemented in the SPACE computer program. The program is built from a collection of FORTRAN subroutines. Some were documented by Willekens and Rogers (1978), others were developed at the Institute of Behavioral Science in the Population Program, University of Colorado at Boulder. In its current version, the program handles as many as four regions and a maximum of 18 5-year age groups. The program allows for origin-dependent models, as well as models that are open to external (i.e., international) migration. The standard analysis includes the preliminary demographic descriptions of each regional population, the regional probabilities of dying and outmigrating, life histories and expectancies, the projection matrix, and multiregional population projections. Extended analysis options are available to generate multiregional life table populations, spatial stable populations, and spatial zero growth populations. Extended analyses are only provided when the model is origin-independent and closed to external migration. INSTALLATION SPACE runs on any DOS-based PC-compatible computer. The program requires a 286 or faster chip, and a math co-processor is desirable, but not necessary. At least 539,000 bytes of conventional memory are required. Because the program is large and creates a very large amount of output, sufficient disk space must be available. The SPACE program should be run from the hard drive; therefore, the first step in installation is to setup a subdirectory for the SPACE files. To set up a subdirectory called "space" on the C-drive requires a command like the following example: C:\md space To change into the "space" subdirectory, issue this command: C:\cd space Once in the "space" subdirectory, copy the contents of the diskette with the following command if the 3 and 1/2 inch drive is the A-drive: C:\space\copy A:*.* If the 3 and 1/2 inch drive is the B-drive use the following command: C:\space\copy B:*.* The diskette contains the program execution file "space.exe", and the documentation files, "space.doc" and "space.txt". Both files contain the program manual, but "space.doc" is a WordPerfect 5.1 document and "space.txt" is an ASCII file. The other files on the diskette are example files that contain the input data used in the numerical illustrations of Chapters 4-7 in the text. There is an additional example data file for the 1980 U.S. four region open origin-dependent model. EXECUTION To run SPACE you must have a data input file that was previously prepared. To test the program you may want to use one of the example files provided on the diskette. Execution of the program creates an output file which holds all of the program results. At execution time the input file and the output file must be named. In the following example the program is executed from the "space" subdirectory on the C-drive: C:\space\space examp1.dat examp1.out In the above illustration examp1.dat is the file that contains the input data and examp1.out contains the listing of results. PRINTING THE OUTPUT Since the printed results can be voluminous, the internal formatting adopted by the program is aimed at maximizing the amount of information on a page. The best way to control the printed format and the amount of printed output is to read the output file into a word processing program. At that time the user can choose what portion of the results to print and can also choose a small font such as a 6-point font, which will allow the correct page formatting to be retained. For most nonlaser printers, the 6-point font is not an option, but other alternatives may be available. For example, dot matrix printers can usually be set to print in a compressed or condensed mode, or wide carriage line printers can be used to accomodate the extra width of the output. Either of these two printer options allows direct printing without the word processor. These methods may be deficient, however, because although the information may fit on the width of the page, the length of the page may flow over to a second page and produce more printed pages than the first printing alternative. ORGANIZATION OF THE INPUT DATA 1. The first line of the input data file contains the primary title for the model. The title is specified with a maximum of 80 alphanumeric characters. This title will appear at the top of output pages. 2. The second line of the input data is used to specify analysis options. There are three options and all three should be indicated and separated with a blank. These three analysis options are explained further in the text, in Chapters 3,4 and 5. The three options are ordered as follows: -Life Histories (0=not requested, 1=requested) -Population Projections (0=not requested, 1=requested, output for every projection year printed, 2=requested, output for only base and final projection year printed) -Extended Options: analysis of life table population, spatial reproductive value, zero population growth (0=not requested, 1=requested). This option is only calculated for closed origin-independent models. 3. The third line of the input data contains all other model specifications. Ten variables are necessary to specify the model. They should be set out in order and separated with blanks. -Origin-dependent (See Chapter 6 in the text.) (0=no, 1=yes) -Open to external migration (See Chapter 7 in the text.) (0=no, 1=yes) -Number of 5-year age group categories (0-4,5-9,10-14,etc.) (must be less than or equal to 18) -Number of regions in system (must be less than or equal to 4) -Method for calculating probabilities of migrating (See Chapter 4 in text.) (1=annual rates; Option 1, 2=conditional survivorship proportions; Option 2) -Method for reporting births and deaths (0=annual numbers, 1=annual rates) -Method for reporting migration (0=numbers, 1=rates or conditional survivorship proportions) -Year that input data were observed, i.e., base year -Final Year for Projections -Number of secondary title lines to follow (1 or more) 4. The next lines are secondary title lines that help to define the model in the output listing. Although, the number of secondary title lines may vary, their number should match the last value in the model specification record. (See last option under (3)) 5. Following the secondary title lines are the region labels. These are alphanumeric 8-character fixed fields (no separation with blanks). There should be a label for each region of residence. If the model is origin- dependent there also should be an additional label for the total system (for example, Nation). The region labels should be in the same order as the data that follow. 6. Following the region labels are the region radices. These are used to calculate the multiregional life tables and are traditionally set at 100,000. These radices are freefield (separated by blanks) and floating-point (decimal points are explicit). ORIGIN-INDEPENDENT, CLOSED MODELS 7. If the model is origin-independent, the data for each region of residence are formatted in the same manner. The regional observed data begin with the regional population stocks. Population stocks are followed by births, deaths, and outmigration flow data to each of the regions of residence. The data are separated with blanks and are always formatted as floating-point real numbers (decimal points are explicit). All population, births, deaths, and outmigration data are age-specific; therefore, the number of each should correspond to the number of age categories specified in the model. (See third option above under (3).) Following the data for the first region, the corresponding data for the second region of residence continues in the same format (population, births, deaths, and outmigration flow data to each region of residence). This structure is repeated until all regions of residence are included. (See Input Data Example 1.) ORIGIN-INDEPENDENT, OPEN MODELS 7. If the model is origin-independent the data for each region of residence are formatted the same as before. The regional observed data begin with the regional population stocks. Population stocks are followed by births, deaths, and outmigration flow data to each of the regions of residence. The data are separated with blanks and are always formatted as floating point real numbers (decimal points are explicit). All population, births, deaths, and outmigration flow data are age-specific; therefore, the number of each should correspond to the number of age categories specified in the model. (See third option above under (3).) Because the model is open to external migration the final item of input is the estimated age-specific number of net immigrants to the region over the past 5 years. Data for the second region of residence are recorded in the same format as before (population, births, deaths, and outmigration flows to each region of residence, and number of net immigrants over a 5-year period). This structure continues until all regions of residence are included. (See Input Data Example 2.) ORIGIN-DEPENDENT MODELS 7. If the model is origin-dependent, the data for each region of origin begin with the region label. The region of origin label is a fixed alphanumeric 8- character variable. The data for a region of origin are comprised of all the observed data for each region of residence for the population born in that region of origin. The observed data for a particular region of residence within a region of origin are formatted in the same manner as they are for the region of residence in an origin-independent model described above. Consequently, for a particular region of origin there will be observed data for each region in the system. Once the data connecting the first region of origin with each of the other possible regions of residence are exhausted, then the same structure is repeated for all of the remaining regions of origin. ORIGIN-DEPENDENT, CLOSED MODELS 8. Once the above input structure of (7) is repeated for each region of origin, the observed data for the total system are reported. The total population in a closed origin-dependent model will be limited to just the native population, since each member of the system must have an origin in the system. (See Input Data Example 3.) ORIGIN-DEPENDENT, OPEN MODELS 8. If the origin-dependent model is open, then there must be an additional non-native region of origin. In other words, there will be one more region of origin than regions of residence. This non-native population will have population stocks, births, deaths and outmigration flow data for each of the regions of residence. These data will follow the same structure as described above and will appear before the data for the total system. 9. Finally, data for the total national system are reported next. The total system in an origin-dependent open model includes the population born in any of the regions, including the non-native region. The total system reports the population stocks, births, deaths, and outmigration flow data for each of the regions of residence as well as the estimated number of net immigrants to the region over a 5-year period. (See Input Data Example 4.)
