Fernando Riosmena's research interests intersect the fields of formal and social demography with an emphasis on how demographic processes are associated with the social mobility, well-being, and development in Latin American societies and immigrant communities from said region in the United States. He has done work on the formal demography of labor migration; the role of social ties and their legal status in explaining inter-country differences in US migration dynamics in Latin America; and the association between migration and other life course events. Besides these issues, Fernando is currently doing research on the health selectivity of U.S.-bound and return migration of Mexicans while looking at differences between self-reported measures and clinical reports, and the potential role of ecological conditions (i.e. health and socioeconomic characteristics) in origins.
