Call for Participant Applications
- The University of Colorado at Boulder's Population Center (CUPC) and the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Resilient and Sustainable Cities (RS-Cities) Project present a workshop to critically explore the science of environmental factors within human migration decision-making, particularly as related to urbanization processes and climate change.
- The social implications of contemporary environmental change clearly demand heightened research and policy attention and the workshop's three primary goals are designed to address these needs. We aim to 1) provide an overview of existing scholarship on migration-urbanization-climate change connections through participant presentations, 2) lay a foundation for future research through critical dialogue on research gaps, common interests, and funding opportunities, and 3) consider routes of connections with policymakers and practitioners.
- The workshop will take place May 7-8, 2012, in Boulder, Colorado. Domestic expenses covered include travel, lodging and per diem.
- The workshop will convene a group of 10-15 individuals representing natural and social sciences. Workshop organizers aim for a mix of scholars already engaged in migration-urbanization-environmental research as well as those engaged in work on at least one of these topics but with interest in pursuing interdisciplinary research exploring the connections.
- The CUPC and NCAR organizers aim for participants with a variety of levels of experience, from post-doctoral researchers to more advanced scholars. Of particular interest is a dialogue considering existing comparative research as well as useful future comparative approaches. The development of one or more research teams to pursue concrete directions for future research is a particularly desired outcome, while the organizers also aim to pursue a specially published collection based on presentations if relevant.
