GENERAL ADVISING NOTES

  • A minimum course grade of C- or better is required for all courses. No Pass/Fail allowed for major courses.
  • If at all possible, you should arrange to spend a year or semester on study abroad. CU financial aid can usually be applied to CU-sponsored programs.

LOWER DIVISION

UPPER DIVISION

  • Complete the requirements listed below and the requirements listed for categories, area of geographic concentration, senior seminar, and foreign language. There is a choice of 3 options for Categories & Area requirements:
  • OPTION 1: General Expertise: Complete one course from each of the following seven categories and 9 hours of upper division courses in your area of geographic concentration.
  • OPTION 2: Intensive Geographic Specialization: Complete one course from six out of the seven categories and 12 hours of upper division courses in your area of geographic concentration.
  • OPTION 3: Functional Specialization: Four courses from one of the following functional categories: I. Development & Culture, II. The Global Economy, III. International Security, IV. International Institutions, Rights, and Norms. Three more courses; one each from a different category. 9 hours of upper division courses in your area of geographic concentration.
  • No more than 4 courses out of the seven categories may be from one department.

CRITICAL THINKING SEMINAR

Complete one of the following: IAFS 4500 or IAFS 4800. Please refer to this semester's schedule for classes currently available.

 

AREA OF GEOGRAPHIC CONCENTRATION

IAFS majors must declare an area of geographic concentration, and a language appropriate to that area, no later than the beginning of their Junior year.

  • Area Requirements - IA majors will need 9 or 12 upper division hours in their area of geographic concentration depending on which of the 3 options above they have chosen to complete. Area of Geographic Concentration is a part of or a whole region outside the United States, including: Africa South of the Sahara; Asia; Eurasia; Europe; the Middle East or Latin America . The area of geographic concentration: should be mainly in the social sciences; must include one course in contemporary history; and can include a three hour course of contemporary literature (taught in the foreign language). Students wishing to use other areas of concentration must receive written approval from the Director of the International Affairs Program.
  • IAFS 4930 Internship in International Affairs may count for either an upper division category or for an area of concentration depending on the structure of the internship and approval by the internship professor.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT

Minimum requirement: Third-year, university-level proficiency in a foreign language appropriate to the area of concentration. This requirement may be met through:

  • Completion of two 3000-level grammar courses in the language (except Spanish see below);
    OR
  • Certification by the appropriate department of such competence. See advisor for details.
