Job Skills Development and Enhancement Seminars

Organizational and Employee Development Department seminars are information-centered. The underlying objective for the instructor is to outline a prescribed way to complete a concrete task or adhere to specific policies. Seminars are generally under four hours in length.

All offerings are free of charge for Boulder faculty and staff. For System Administration, a $25.00 fee will be charged to the participant's department. To register: call Organizational and Employee Development at 2-8103, unless otherwise noted.

Being Your Own Best Advocate Seminar
Instructor: Carole Anderson, University of Nevada, Reno

In order to move ahead professionally and be in control of your life, taking care of yourself must take priority! Being Your Own Best Advocate will teach you strategies for focusing on what’s important to you and ways to use those strategies to promote yourself in the best light. Learn how to bring solutions to those in higher level positions. Being your own best advocate also means becoming a life long learner, being ready for change when it happens as well as embracing it and building relationships of mutual respect.

Communication Seminar

Email and Business Writing

If you think you suffer from “writer’s block” every time you sit down to write, this seminar could change your perception about writing. It is designed to help you communicate more effectively through e-mail and business letter writing. You will improve your communication skills by learning to write clearly, concisely, and humanely. (Min 8 participants)

Emotional Intelligence

Emotional Intelligence (EI) is the ability to recognize and understand emotions in yourself and others, and your ability to use this awareness to manage your behavior and relationships. EI has been shown to increase job performance, productivity, and personal excellence. Come to this 2-hour seminar to explore this important ability and gain skills to improve your own emotional intelligence. (Min 8 participants)

Generations in the Workplace

Ever wonder if generational differences are hampering your workplace effectiveness? This seminar will examine the different perspectives each generation brings to the workplace as well as offer tips on how to maximize interactions with co-workers. Special emphasis will be placed on communicating with, motivating, and rewarding different generations. (Min 8 participants)


How to Run an Effective Meeting

Do you think meetings are a waste of time? Have you attended a meeting and wondered why you were there? This seminar will allow you to identify the basic elements of organizing and running effective meetings. We will discuss the importance of defining the purpose of a meeting and how to create and use an agenda. (Min 8 participants)

Humor in the Workplace

Does reducing stress, increasing mental flexibility and enhancing productivity sound appealing?  Accomplish all of the above by attending Humor in the Workplace!  This two hour seminar will define what humor is, determine appropriate uses of humor in the workplace, and identify strategies to make your workplace more humorous. Presentation Skills Seminar - Part 1
Instructor: Mark Augustin

Are you afraid to speak in public? Does the audience intimidate you? Attend this workshop and learn skills that will help you turn stage fright into stage presence. We will focus on skills that you have direct control over when presenting information to a group. As you learn the skills and use them, your self-confidence will increase along with the participant evaluations for your session. (Min 8 participants)


Presentation Skills Seminar - Part 2
Instructor: Mark Augustin

Building on the skills learned in Part 1, this session will focus on the other two areas to consider when providing a training session: Content, and Technical Support/Environment. Participants will learn how to put variety into their sessions to keep the audience engaged, as well as how to determine which room set up will work best for your session. (Min 8 participants)


RealColors

For centuries, people have searched for ways to peek into the human mind. The Greek philosopher, scientist and physician, Hippocrates wrote that all human beings could be divided into four distinct personality types. Real Colors is an instrument based on the more modern Temperament theories developed by David Keirsey. It is designed to help people recognize, accept, learn to value and understand human behaviors to improve empathy and communication in the workplace. (Min 8 participants)
