Guide to Motivating Employees

University of Colorado at Boulder

Updated May 2008

There are many effective and creative ways to motivate employees and recognize their accomplishments. In a climate of economic challenges at the University and throughout the nation, low-cost, high-impact strategies are increasingly important. I am excited to offer the Department of Human Resources Guide to Motivating Employees, which describes basic principles of employee motivation and cites examples from successful companies, relevant workforce research, and effective practices already in use at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Our goal is to share approaches for employee motivation that may fit your organization and produce results.

This guide offers tools for managers and supervisors including:
  • A motivation survey to discover what employees in your organization value
  • A template to assist you in developing a recognition program for your department
  • Information on developing a flex-schedule program for your work unit
  • How to develop an annual awards program for your work unit
  • A list of no-cost and low-cost incentive rewards
  • Rules and policies at CU-Boulder that relate to staff incentives
We know that you want to be the best supervisor possible. For your convenience, we have included a reading list of leading articles and books relating to employee motivation, and source documents used in preparing the Guide.
