- Define cultural relativism using a passage from one of the essays.
- Compare the development of the portrait in Renaissance painting with Montaigne's
self-reflective style in his essays. How does the exploration of the self in art and
literature encode Renaissance values?
- How would you characterize Montaigne's style of writing, his method of procedure?
Discuss the quotation as a rhetorical device to support an argument and give it authority.
- Discuss Montaigne's view about nature and technology. How do these views relate to his
valorization of the self?
- How are the Indians, according to Montaigne, closer to nature? Comment on his statements
on nature, justice, reason, and courage.
