  1. Define cultural relativism using a passage from one of the essays.
  2. Compare the development of the portrait in Renaissance painting with Montaigne's self-reflective style in his essays. How does the exploration of the self in art and literature encode Renaissance values?
  3. How would you characterize Montaigne's style of writing, his method of procedure? Discuss the quotation as a rhetorical device to support an argument and give it authority.
  4. Discuss Montaigne's view about nature and technology. How do these views relate to his valorization of the self?
  5. How are the Indians, according to Montaigne, closer to nature? Comment on his statements on nature, justice, reason, and courage.
  6. What does Montaigne criticize about his society? What does he say about social hierarchy and class structure?
