Future of Work/Hybrid Work
The Future of Work/Hybrid Work Training Series supports the campus community in navigating the hybrid workplace. The transition taking place as the campus adjusts to a flexible work environment poses challenges and opportunities for supervisors and employees. This training series provides the necessary mindsets, skillsets, and strategies to better thrive in this new environment.
This training series is grounded in Guiding Principles created by HR and Campus Leaders. The following Guiding Principles have been adopted by the campus and provide criteria for how the optimal work environment should:
- Advance the mission of the campus and affected units
- Enhance and not detract from the student experience or research and creative work
- Include planning for impact on diversity, equity and inclusion
- Include planning for impact on sense of place, community and affinity
- Increase/maintain hiring, engagement and retention
- Support the health and wellness of our community
- Support responsible stewardship of resources
- Cultivate a work culture built on trust and productivity
The series is based on the most current research on leading and working in a hybrid environment.
This course provides an introduction to the mindsets and skillsets necessary for managers and supervisors to successfully transition to leading in a hybrid environment. Crucial Conversations
Consider these questions:
- Have you ever wanted to give a coworker sensitive feedback but decided not to for fear the conversation would not go well?
- Does it sometimes feel unsafe to share your honest viewpoint because there is a chance that doing so could lead to backlash?
- Do you ever keep silent about a matter, hoping someone else shares your concern and will speak up?
- Have you ever been lectured or verbally attacked and wished you could respond without making matters worse?
If so, you, your team, or your department need the Crucial Conversations for Mastering Dialogue training.
Crucial Conversations for Mastering Dialogue teaches skills for creating alignment and agreement by fostering open dialogue around high-stakes, emotional, or risky topics. By learning how to speak and be heard (and encouraging others to do the same), you will surface the best ideas, make the highest-quality decisions, and then act on your decisions with unity and commitment.
The CU Boulder Department of Human Resources has teamed up with Crucial Learning to offer this important course to CU Boulder employees. Based on the national best-selling book Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking when the Stakes are High, the course teaches nine powerful skillsets grounded in decades of social science research. The course helps learners develop these vital skills through instruction, application, practice, group discussion, and self-reflection—not just theory – for lasting improvement. Learners will walk away with the ability to speak persuasively, not abrasively; foster teamwork and better decision making; build acceptance rather than resistance, and resolve individual and group disagreements.
What is a Crucial Conversation?
A Crucial Conversation is a discussion between two or more people where the stakes are high, opinions vary, and emotions run strong. When conversations turn crucial, people tend to follow one of two ineffective paths: they either speak directly and abrasively to get the results they want but harm relationships, or they remain silent with the hope of preserving relationships only to sacrifice results.
Learning Outcomes
- Identify problems contributing to poor results and broken relationships.
- Keep composure when feeling angry, defensive, or intimidated. Spot the warning signs that indicate safety and dialogue are at risk.
- Identify victim, villain, and helpless stories you might be telling yourself to justify behavior.
- Recognize when you are at cross-purpose and take steps to rebuild safety and return to dialogue.
- Find and cultivate mutual purpose with those who hold opposing viewpoints.
- Turn each Crucial Conversation into a course of action that leads to results.

Re-Taking the Assessment:
If you have already taken CliftonStrengths at CU Boulder, we encourage you to use your past results. However, there are many reasons why someone may want to re-take the CliftonStrengths assessment. It is important to know, that most individuals will not see meaningful changes in their results over time and, as a result, Gallup's general recommendation is that individuals do not need to retake the assessment.
However, there are certain situations when it may be helpful to retake the assessment:
- When an individual took it right before or after a traumatic life event.
- When an individual took it in their non-native language.
- When an individual was distracted when they took it.
- When an individual took it in school or early in in life, and years 10+ have passed.
- When an individual was not authentic in their responses the first time that they completed the assessment.
Step 3: Get your personalized results.
Your customized CliftonStrengths reports and guides will give you an “aha” moment as you experience new ways to understand what makes you so unique.

What is Coaching?
Coaching is a partnership where a trained coach asks thought-provoking and creative questions that inspires a person to maximize their personal and professional potential. It can unlock untapped sources of imagination, productivity and leadership. Trained coaches help you flourish by helping you focus on doing more of you naturally do best. We work with you to understand your strengths and weaknesses and how to manage both more effectively. We can work with you to provide professional development, management effectiveness, team dynamics, conflict resolution, team performance, career transitions, and leadership development.
What to Expect in a Coaching Session
These employee-driven coaching conversations can be focused on a variety of different topics to support employees including personal/professional development, closing skills gaps, and working towards defined goals or outcomes. Through intentional development and application of identified Strengths, individuals can improve their ability to build relationships, manage daily responsibilities, influence and respond to others, and think about and process information.
