Paul Beale , PhD — Director


Paul Beale grew up in Wilmington, North Carolina. He received  his B.S. in Physics with Highest Honors from the University of North Carolina in 1977 and his Ph.D. in Physics from Cornell University in 1982. He was a postdoctoral researcher at Oxford University from 1982-1984. He joined the faculty of Department of Physics at the University of Colorado in 1984. Professor Beale’s research specialty is theoretical condensed matter physics. He uses statistical mechanics to study the thermodynamic properties of materials. Professor Beale served as Faculty Associate for Curricular Affairs, Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs, and Associate Dean for the Natural Sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences from 1994-1999. He won the Boulder Faculty Assembly Excellence in Teaching Award  in 2004. Todd Gleeson, the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences appointed him to be the Director of the Honors Program in 2006.

When he is not on campus you might see Professor Beale riding his racing bicycle on the roads of Boulder county or flying his airplane over the continental divide.
