First People of the Kalahari Versus The State of Botswana by Hollie Hendrikson
People of the same race can be deeply divided by civilization; people of different races may be united by civilization…The crucial distinctions among groups concern their values, beliefs, institutions and social structures, not their physical size, head shapes, and skin color.
Samuel P. Huntington
On October 10, 2005, the government of Botswana forcibly removed all but twenty-seven individuals living in the Kalahari Game Reserve. Since 1997, approximately 2000 inhabitants of the game reserved have been relocated to other areas in Botswana, but the government has a long history of these attempts of relocation. During the 1960s and lasting through the 1980s, these relocation techniques were used by the government to conserve the land and the animals within the Kalahari, which is the central location for the San and Bakgalagadi tribes. The government also desired to introduce this group of individuals into modern society. However, there has been significant resistance...(more)

Abstract
Observing Venus was very important to the Maya, and this is evident in many aspects of their society. The cyclical movements of the planet were studied, and predicted by the Mayan astronomers. In studying Mayan artwork, scholars have been able to learn a lot about Venus’ role in Mayan mythology, and its relationship with events in the Maya’s history. One of the most common associations has been recognized between the cycles of Venus, and Maya warfare. Recent studies, with the aid of new technologies, have allowed scholars to more thoroughly understand Venus’ role in timing major events for the Maya.
Introduction
The Maya of Mesoamerica placed great importance on their observations of the heavens, and even constructed their cities to place themselves within their understanding of the cosmos. Venus, in particular, was of great interest to the Maya. They were able to recognize that this planet (or “star” as they observed it) was the same entity that moved from both eastern to western horizons in a cyclical, predictable pattern. Venus, along with other constellations and celestial bodies, was incorporated into rich tales of the (more)

NAFTA, Agriculture, and South-North Migration by Michael D. Coe
Implemented in 1994, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) has substantially increased trade between the US and Mexico. Despite the existence of numerous studies on trade volumes, few studies in comparison explore the historic role of increasing migration between Mexico and the United States during this time period. In this paper I intend to argue that NAFTA has led to a large increase in migration, particularly unauthorized migration, from Mexico to the United States, because of the commercialization of rural Mexican agriculture, liberalization of Mexican agricultural tariffs, trade-distorting US agricultural policies, and greater US-Mexico economic ties.
The Mexican agricultural economy is distinct from its American counterpart in both scope and history. Whereas agriculture comprises .7% of the US work force and generates 1% of GDP, Mexican agriculture comprises 18% of the workforce (more)

Electronic Tagging for Alzheimer’s Patients by Lindsay A. Hohsfield
The Alzheimerís Association estimates as many as seven out of ten people with Alzheimerís disease or other related dementia will wander off and get lost during the course of their disease, and many will do so repeatedly (Silverstein et. al., 2002). According to a survey conducted by Koester and Stooksbury, using data from the Virginia Department of Emergency Service lost-subject database, if a wandering patient has not been found within a 24-hour period their chance of surviving drops significantly from a 19% mortality rate to 46% (Koester and Stooksbury, 1995). This is worrisome with 4.5 million Alzheimerís sufferers in...(more)

minds fracture like glass shards
like hearts
cutting the plastic into parts
leaving worn bits behind as the departed gets started running.
i tried using rose stems to hold the pieces in place.
they bore holes with thorns

held me in place.
there is a vacancy in space
not so unlike the waste i find iíve built.
trash cannot be erased
and is as invasive as silt
working its way into every nook and cranny
ohh... manny, i understand you brother.
shaking in the closet
as the world bears down
