History Minor Requirements
Requirements Effective as of September 1, 1995. If you started the minor prior to that date your requirements may be different.
The Department of History instituted a Minor program starting in the Fall of 1992. The requirements are as follows:
- A total of 21 hours in History, of which at least 12 hours must be upper-division. Courses intended to count for the minor may not be taken on a pass-fail basis, and students must earn a C- or better in any course to be counted toward the 21 hour minor requirement.
- At least three hours (one course each) must be taken in each of the three following geographical areas: the United States, Europe, and World Areas (the latter field is comprised of Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, China, Japan, and South Asia).
- The department recommends, but does not require, that History Minors take Comparative World History (HIST 4020). This course is not offered during Summer terms, so plan your schedules accordingly.
- 6 hours of course work should be based upon one of the geographical areas (U.S., Europe, or World Areas). If it is not, the student must make a convincing, coherent thematic plan and present it for approval to the Director of Undergraduate Studies. (This theme may be related to the student's major, e.g., social history, diplomatic/military history, or women's history.)
Additional Information about the minor program
- 2000-level History courses, and courses taken for Core Curriculum credit are applicable to the minor. 4000-level courses may be used to fulfill both upper-division hours and concentration hours.
- If you are planning to take History 4020, it must be taken during the junior or senior year, unless you obtain permission from the instructor to take it early. Minors may only register for 4020 with a History Advisor (it cannot be done on the Web), as the course is normally restricted to majors.
- 3000-level courses (with the exception of HIST 3000, which is specifically for non-majors) are restricted to majors only, unless the course is not full as of the second week of drop-add or you have written permission from the instructor.
- Minoring in History does not confer any waitlist priority in History courses.
