March 7
The History Department co-sponsors this entry in the Center for Asian Studies Speaker Series: "Racism Under Fire: Japanese as Americans, Koreans as Japanese in WWII" Presented by Takashi Fujitani, Associate Professor of History at University of California, San Diego. In this talk professor Fujitani will provide a perspective on the US and Japan that challenges common understandings of these two nation-state based empires during the Second World War. He argues that the demands of waging total war resulted in very similar policies toward minorities and colonial subjects. In contrast to the Nazi solution, which was to expand territorial empire while excising despised minorities, the Japanese and American wartime regimes both disavowed racism and welcomed targeted colonial subjects and minorities into their nations. At the same time, racism did not end. 'Racism Under Fire' refers to both the experience of racism by populations mobilized for war and a new attack upon racism, which was an effect of the need to mobilize these populations, whereby racism itself comes under fire. The talk will be held at 5:00 p.m., Hellems room 141.
