How to Apply to the Graduate Program in History

THE APPLICATION DEADLINE FOR ADMISSION TO THE GRADUATE PROGRAM OF THE HISTORY DEPARTMENT IS DECEMBER 1ST OF THE PREVIOUS CALENDAR YEAR.  THE PROGRAM DOES NOT CONSIDER MID-YEAR ADMISSIONS.

Please note that we only admit new students in the Fall semester. Applications are only available online there is no printed packet. There is an application fee of $60.00 (US) for domestic applicants and $80.00 (US) for international applicants. Checks or money orders should be made payable to the University of Colorado. Admission decisions on applications are sent out no earlier than the third week of February in any given application cycle.

The Graduate Admissions Office must be received and process each of the items listed below before the Department of History will consider your application for admission:

  • Completed online application for admission parts 1 and 2
  • GRE general test scores
  • 3 letters of recommendation
  • academic writing sample (10-20 pages)
  • personal statement of purpose
  • For review and decision purposes you are required to upload an unofficial copy of your transcript(s) in the online application. We require one copy of the scanned transcript from each undergraduate and graduate institution that you attended. This includes community colleges, summer sessions, and extension programs. While credits from one institution may appear on the transcript of a second institution, unofficial transcripts must be submitted from each institution, regardless of the length of attendance, and whether or not courses were completed.  Failure to list and submit transcripts from all institutions previously attended is considered to be a violation of academic ethics and may result in the cancellation of your admission or dismissal from the university.

ONLY after you are recommended for admission will you need to provide official transcripts

When sending GRE or TOEFL scores, they should be sent to the Registrar's Office. The institutional code for the University of Colorado is 4841; you do not need a department code.

Applicants will be notified if any part of your application is missing; you do not need to contact the department.
