The Department of History offers graduate programs leading to the Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in U. S. History, the History of Medieval/Early Modern Europe, and Modern Europe. Students who earn a graduate degree are trained in the central principles and research methods that characterize the discipline of History. They also gain a thorough grounding in their particular area of study.

Master of Arts candidates can choose from two courses of study, a thesis or a non-thesis option. Doctoral candidates are expected to produce a book-length study based on original research within their area of specialization, and be able to teach both broad survey courses and courses in their specialty. Comprehensive information regarding our M.A. and Ph.D. programs is available on the MA program and PhD program pages.

The department is pleased to announce a new area of specialization in Asian studies for master's degree students. For more information regarding this initiative please see: http://www.colorado.edu/history/grad/asian-hist-ma.html
