HIST 4339
Midterm Guidelines
Please bring a bluebook to Friday’s exam.
Grading Guidelines:
There will be two IDs (20 points each); you can choose from a list of four. Your answer should be roughly four to five sentences for each, identifying and giving significance. Your answer should draw on both readings and lectures whenever possible.
There will be one essay (60 points), from a choice of two questions. Your essay must have a clear argument, and you must support your argument with specific evidence. Top-notch essays will draw on readings and lectures and will demonstrate your ability to synthesize material. I recommend that you begin by quickly outlining your essays.
Study Guidelines:
I suggest you focus on the major themes that have recurred throughout the course so far. Thinking about specific examples for each theme is a great way to study. Themes can also be useful for specifying ID significance.
Synthesis of material will also be important. For example, you should be able to analyze continuities and/or discontinuities throughout the historical period we’ve discussed or to compare two different events/issues/individuals/etc.
Sample Themes:
Borderlands contradictions
Collaboration
Communal relations (i.e. between religious groups)
Cultural/political/economic borderlands
Direct and indirect rule
Nationalism
Partition
Race relations
Resistance
