Tips for Staying Healthy
As we get into the thick of cold and flu season it is even more important to keep your immune system healthy and prevent the spread of germs!
1. Wash your hands frequently
Think of all the doorknobs, computer keyboards, desks, chairs, and other surfaces you come in contact with every day that other people (sick people!) do, too. Wash your hands frequently (especially before eating or drinking) to avoid spreading and getting sick from germs left behind by others.
To properly wash your hands, use warm water and soap to scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds (about as long as it takes to sing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star in your head). Use a paper towel to open the bathroom door and turn off the faucet.
2. Use gel hand sanitizer when warm water and soap are not available
This should be used as a supplement to, rather than a substitute for, washing your hands. Our Cold Care Kits have a travel size hand sanitizer perfect for your backpack. Cold Care Kits are available at Community Health (UMC 411) and Wardenburg Health Center. Pick yours up today!
3. Get your flu shot
So far this season, the flu vaccine is very effective and well-matched to circulating flu strains. One of the flu strains has ~99% resistance to Tamiflu (antiviral treatment) and makes up about 50% of the circulating strains currently in Colorado. The best protection against the flu is the vaccine. For more flu info click here
4. Cover your nose and mouth when you sneeze or cough
Sneeze and cough into your sleeve to keep germs off your hands.
5. Sleep
Most college students need at least 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night!
6. Clean the surfaces in your room regularly
Flu viruses can remain on surfaces for a few hours so, if you touch a contaminated surface and wipe your eyes or nose, you may come down with flu
