Risky Behaviors

4 modes of transmission for HIV

  • Blood
  • Semen
  • vaginal fluids
  • breast milk

Modes of transmission for HPV/HSV

  • skin to skin contact (oral, anal, genital, manual, eyes)
  • mucous membranes

Modes of transmission for Chlamydia/Gonorrhea

  • fluid exchange (semen or vaginal fluids, oral sex)
  • from hand to eye

The risk of all these behaviors is very conditional. Use of a barrier can reduce risk for many of these behaviors. It is difficult to put these in exact order of risk for this reason. Under specific conditions, without the use of a barrier, the risk continuum might go in this order for HIV transmission.

High Risk for HIV Transmission

  • Anal intercourse (unprotected)
  • Vaginal intercourse (unprotected)

Moderate Risk for HIV Transmission

  • Sharing sex toys (without barrier or washing)

Low Risk for HIV Transmission

  • Vaginal-vaginal intercourse
  • Oral sex on a female
  • Fellatio (oral to penile contact)

Almost No Risk for HIV Transmission

  • Analingus (oral to anal contact)
  • Manual stimulation
  • Mutual masturbation
  • Wet/deep kissing
  • Dry kissing
  • Solo masturbation
  • Massage/hugging
  • Fantasy
