Sexual Health Peer Educators

Training
Weekend intensive trainings for new volunteers are held once a semester.

Sexual Health Educator Weekly Meetings
Peer educators will meet Wednesday evenings from 5:00 - 6:30 p.m. during Fall and Spring semesters. Sexual Health Program Coordinators and interested volunteers will facilitate meetings, which will approximately follow this agenda:

Sexual Health Education Program Presentations
Volunteers will give interactive, educational presentations to their peers in classrooms, residence halls, fraternities, sororities, campus clubs and organizations, and local high schools on sexual health topics. Specific presentation topics include the following:

  1. skill building methods that assist students in preventing sexually transmitted infections and unintended pregnancies
  2. safer sex methods: ranging from abstinence to barrier protected sexual intercourse
  3. sexually transmitted infections: including HIV - prevention, symptomology, and treatment
  4. pregnancy prevention/contraception

Staffed Information Tables
Staffed information tables scheduled periodically in the UMC, at health fairs, and special events as well as during World AIDS Day, National Condom Week, and the Safer Spring Break week. Volunteer educators staffing the tables will distribute free condoms and lubricant, as well as educational and informational materials regarding sexually transmitted infections, safer sex practices, sexual health resources, HIV testing, and other sexual health information.

Resident Hall Sexual Health Prevention and Education Programs
Sexual Health Education Program recruitment, presentations, individual outreach, resources and collaborative events designed specifically for resident advisors and residents of CU resident halls. Specific strategies include:

  • Distribution and posting of “social marketing” flyers to address primary behavioral objectives.
  • Distribution of recruitment flyers through resident advisors
  • Presentations conducted by trained sexual health educators on request by resident advisors
  • Condom baskets and refills for RAs

Campus/Community Collaboration and Committee Work
Individual and ongoing projects done in collaboration with CU campus departments and programs (outside of Wardenburg) and Boulder County programs, agencies, and organizations designed to promote sexual responsibility and sexual health.

 

Latex Barrier and Lubricant Distribution
The CHED central office will offer a continual supply of free condoms, dental dams, internal/female condoms, and lubricant accompanied by instructions for consistent and correct use. Latex barriers and lubricant will be distributed through the SHEP office, “Condom Zaps,” condomo egg machines, information tables, health fairs, and special events.

Condom Zaps:
Once per month, Wardenburg’s SHPE Program and Boulder County AIDS Project will collaborate and distribute safer sex kits in three area bars. Prior bar arrangements will be made by Wardenburg and BCAP Outreach Coordinators. Interested Sexual Health Peer Educators will volunteer for the night. All Condom Squad participants will attend a pre-Zap informational meeting and sign the Condom Zap Volunteer Protocol.
