Individual Therapy

If part of the treatment plan made with your provider is for individual therapy, here is what you can expect. Except for rare cases, you can expect for your individual therapy to be short term. Your provider will want to understand as much as possible about what you are distressed about. Expect him or her to do a lot of listening! If you feel confused about what you will say, don’t worry. Their job is to help you clarify what is contributing to your struggle—you don’t have to have it all figured out.

On your part, try to be open to learning something new and to have your difficulty framed in a new way. You can expect a therapist to be supportive but not necessarily always in agreement with your understanding of things. Their job is to help you expand, in a positive way, your own understanding and awareness of what is going on. That helps you know how to solve your difficulty. You can expect the therapists at PHP to encourage consideration of group therapy, which will allow you to be seen at the clinic until you resolve what you came in for, and may speed up the resolution of your concern.
