September 25, 2009 Update
University of Colorado at Boulder health officials today reported that for the second week they are seeing fewer cases of students with flu-like symptoms at Wardenburg Health Center, with the number of cases of H1N1 confirmed by the state health department standing at four and the number of students seen in the clinic with flu-like symptoms at 532 since Aug. 1.
These numbers include students living both on and off campus. They do not include students who have been seen by an off-campus health care provider or those who called to talk with a nurse on the phone. The university has scaled back its Type A influenza testing, testing only students who meet high-risk criteria or who are hospitalized. To date, two students have been hospitalized and both have recovered from their flu symptoms.

September 18, 2009 Update
Since August 19, Wardenburg has seen 446 cases of flu-like illnesses. Of these, 106 have been formally confirmed as flu by lab testing. Because we have confirmed that flu is here, we are not testing all suspected cases of the flu.
The continued recommendation is to stay home if you are ill. You only need to see a health care provider if you have risk factors or severe symptoms. However, if your condition does not improve after a few days or your symptoms get worse, you should probably been seen by a health care provider. If you are uncertain, please don't hesitate to call the Wardenburg phone nurse at 303-492-3435.
If you are sick, please stay at home and self-isolate to minimize the spread of illness. Cover your cough and wash your hands. Your friends, classmates, and co-workers will thank you for not sharing your germs.

September 11, 2009 Update
The total number of confirmed H1N1 cases reported on campus since the beginning of the school year stands at four.
Test results for Type A Influenza have identified 92 probable H1N1 cases since the start of classes, up from 85 last week, and two students have been hospitalized. Both have recovered from their flu symptoms and are out of the hospital.
The university has seen 370 students with flu-like symptoms since August 1. Wardenburg did not start seeing larger numbers of these students until after Aug. 19. These numbers include students living both on and off campus.
Wardenburg's Medical Clinic is seeing about 100 students per week with flu-like symptoms. The university has scaled back its Type A influenza testing, testing only students who meet high-risk criteria or who are hospitalized.
We continue to urge ill students, faculty, and staff to remain at home if they are sick. You do not need to seek medical treatment unless you have risk factors, or severe or worsening symptoms. You are contagious until about one day after your fever is gone. Please self-isolate to avoid spreading this illness to those around you. Please be diligent about covering your cough and washing your hands.

September 4, 2009 Update
The four samples we sent to CDPHE last week all came back positive for H1N1 flu. Because we have confirmed this outbreak is H1N1 flu, we are not sending any more samples to CDPHE for sub-typing.
Having confirmed that H1N1 flu is present on campus and because of our high patient volume and the variable flu test accuracy, we are not testing all patients with flu symptoms. Thus, from Friday, August 28 through Thursday, September 3 we have had 89 test positive for flu. Please be aware that these lower number do not indicate that incidence of flu cases is decreasing. The number of patients we saw 8/28 - 9/3 meeting the clinical definition for the flu is 146.
Things to keep in mind:
- These numbers reflect ONLY students seen at Wardenburg Health Center. We do not have numbers for faculty and staff, or for students that seek medical attention from off-campus providers.
- We are urging all individuals with flu-like symptoms that do not have risk factors or severe symptoms to remain at home and NOT go to their health care provider. This means it is likely that there are additional cases in the student community above and beyond the numbers we are seeing at Wardenburg.
- Accuracy of the standard test for influenza is variable. The test may come up negative even if the patient does have the flu. The longer an individual is ill before being tested, the more likely it is that the test will come back negative for flu.
- Patients that have tested positive for flu A may or may not have the H1N1 flu strain. As of 8/26/09 Wardenburg has been designated a sentinel site which allows us to send flu samples to CDPHE to see if the cases are truly H1N1.
August 28, 2009 Update
We are seeing approximately 180 patients per day in the Wardenburg Medical Clinic for various types of appointments. From Monday, August 24 through Thursday, August 27 we have had approximately 114 people who have met the clinical definition of flu, and 45 have tested positive for flu A.
We started last week with less than 10% of Medical Clinic visits being upper respiratory influenza-like illnesses. Currently we are hovering around 15%.
Four samples have been sent to CDPHE to see if this is H1N1 flu; we are still awaiting confirmation.
We have received reports that one CU student has been hospitalized after being diagnosed with flu A. The patient is stable and may be discharged today.
