Key Terms

Active: A fully initiated member of a sorority or fraternity with full chapter privileges and responsibilities.

Alum: A member who has graduated.

Big Sister or Brother: An active member assigned to assist and advise a new member/associate member/pledge.

Chapter: The local group which represents a segment of the national organization.

Chapter house: At CU-Boulder all chapter houses are either owned or rented by the individual organization.

Greek: A member of a sorority or fraternity.

Initiation: The time when a pledge or associate is made a full member.

Panhellenic: The student-run governing board of all sororities.

New Member/Associate/Pledge: A new or trial member of a Greek letter organization.

Recruitment/Rush: The process by which a sorority or fraternity recruits new members.

Potential New Member: A person interested in becoming a member of a sorority or fraternity.
