Letter of Interest

To the applicant: Please describe on separate sheets (2-3 typed pages) your interest in the SMART program. Your personal academic statement should explain why you want to participate in the SMART program, what you hope to gain from the program, and how this research experience will help you achieve your academic and career goals. Your statement should include a description of:

  • Your specific research interests

  • Any relevant research experience you have had in an academic or work setting

  • Your goals beyond earning a baccalaureate degree

  • The qualities you would contribute to the SMART program and how those qualities would benefit both the program and its participants

Please note that the letter of interest is the most important part of your application. Successful applicants are those who can demonstrate an understanding of research topics in their field and can express a particular interest in one or two areas. SMART staff members are available to answer any questions applicants may have regarding their letters of interest. Please make use of this resource.

Please type your name on your letter of interest, and make sure that the print is clear enough to be legible when photocopied or scanned.

Transcripts

To the applicant: Please submit a student copy of your transcripts with your application and have official transcripts from all institutions you attended sent directly to the SMART office.

Financial Aid Information

Financial aid information is used only to determine an applicant's eligibility for the SMART program. The financial aid information received will be kept strictly confidential, and will not be used during the intern selection process.

If you are applying as an economically disadvantaged first generation college student (in accordance with federal income guidelines), please submit a copy of your FAFSA (Free Application for Student Aid) or SAR (Student Aid Report). If you have not applied for financial aid, you may complete a FAFSA on the US Department of Education's FAFSA web site.

Students who meet program eligibility requirements based upon their race or ethnicity do not need to submit financial aid information.
