Most PhD students in science, math, and engineering departments receive funding throughout their academic careers through teaching or research assistantships. The NSF AGEP and NIH IMSD assistantships help ensure that every historically underserved student admitted into a science, math, or engineering doctoral program receives funding.
Students must apply and be accepted into a science, math or engineering doctoral program to be eligible for a NSF AGEP or NIH IMSD assistantship. Once accepted, the admitting departments nominate students for funding. Students may not apply directly for NSF AGEP or NIH IMSD assistantships.
