The Transforming Gender Symposium

The annual Transforming Gender Symposium was founded in 2006. Sponsored by the Women and Gender Studies program and the GLBT Resource Center, the symposium began to create a space where the campus and wider community could learn about transgender and intersex identities and issues. Since its inception, the symposium has hosted numerous nationally and internationally known transgender and allied speakers, creating provoking dialogues throughout the community and furthering discussions throughout the year.

Every year the symposium is planned by a committee of staff, faculty, and students. Beginning in 2011 the symposium also opened up a proposal process for presenters interested in participating in the symposium.

The 5th Annual Transforming Gender Symposium: April 1st & 2nd, 2011

This year's Symposium offered an array of talks, trainings, and film screenings to increase visibility and education about transgender identities and experiences, and to bring together the local transgender and ally community.

Speakers this year included Dean Spade, Dr. Marci Bowers, Dr. Nick Gorton, Rabbi Reuben Zellman, and Ignacio Rivera. We are also proud to announce that our first multi-track program was extremely successful, including workshops specifically for providers as well as a film track.

Looking Forward to The 6th Annual Symposium

Planning the Transforming Gender Symposium is a process which takes most of the year leading up to the event, taken on by a team of volunteers whose tasks range from contacting speakers, to evaluating workshop proposals, to configuring the schedule. If you would like to be involved in planning the next symposium, please contact Steph at wilenche@colorado.edu.

If you or your organization is interested in co-sponsorship please feel free to contact us regarding that as well.
