German Undergraduate Students

Lucile Berkeley Buchanan Undergraduate Essay Prize
Annual prize awarded to the best essay written by a German major in the previous calendar year. Prize is named after Lucile Berkeley Buchanan, an academically gifted German major who in 1918 became the first female black student to graduate from CU. Students should submit a paper originally written for a GRMN course (or course cross-listed with GRMN) in the previous calendar year. Title page should include the course the paper was written for. Paper may be written in German or English and cannot exceed 20 double-spaced pages; if the essay is a research paper, notes and bibliography must be included in the 20-page limit. Students are encouraged to revise the paper before submitting it to the contest. Only one submission per student will be accepted. BA/MA students may submit an essay, provided that the paper was written for an undergraduate course. Award is $200, and made possible by German Gift Fund donors. Papers should be submitted to the department by April 1.

Cliff Hall Memorial Scholarship to Study Abroad in Regensburg
Scholarship for students studying at the University of Regsensburg through CU Study Abroad. Scholarship is for $200 and is in memory of Cliff Hall, who was a Professor of German in GSLL for 30 years and was director of the Regensburg Program in 1970-1971 and 1978-1979. Professor Hall was an avid outdoorsman and especially loved fly-fishing. He will be remembered by many for leading numerous departmental hikes, while sharing his love and knowledge of the outdoors with faculty, staff and students of GSLL. Students interested in applying for the scholarship should submit a copy of their unofficial transcript and a copy of their personal statement that was submitted for the study abroad application by April 1. Late applications will be accepted if funding is still available.

Delta Phi Alpha National German Honor Society
Honor Society for students of German, both undergraduate and graduate. Students do not have to be a German major or minor to become a member. Membership benefits include opportunities to apply for travel funds to Germany. Students are eligible to join Delta Phi Alpha after they have completed four semesters (GRMN 2020) of college-level German, or if they possess equal fluency. Students must have a GPA of 3.3 or higher in their German courses and an overall GPA of 2.7. Applications should be returned to the German Department by March 1.
