Scholarship for a student continuing in the program the following year. Scholarship is $1,000 and named after Grace van Sweringen Baur, one of the first German professors at CU. Interested students should submit a one-page description of their plans for future study, including career and thesis plans, to the Graduate Advisor, by April 1. Delta Phi Alpha National German Honor Society
Honor Society for students of German, both undergraduate and graduate. Students do not have to be a German major or minor to become a member. Membership benefits include opportunities to apply for travel funds to Germany. Students are eligible to join Delta Phi Alpha after they have completed four semesters (GRMN 2020) of college-level German, or if they possess equal fluency. Students must have a GPA of 3.3 or higher in their German courses and an overall GPA of 2.7. Applications should be returned to the German Department by March 1. Max Kade Fellowship
Each year the department awards two Max Kade Fellowships to our top incoming M.A. students. Fellowships are for $13,000 each and students are also awarded a partial TAship including a TA stipend and partial tuition waiver. Fellowships are funded by the Max Kade Foundation. Dr. Max Kade was a German-American scientist and industrialist. The foundation he established supports a great variety of educational projects. Mary Rippon Graduate Essay Prize
Annual prize awarded to the best paper written by a student enrolled in the German M.A. program (including students in the BA/MA and MA/MBA programs in German). Prize is named after Professor Mary Rippon, the first women professor at the University of Colorado and the first woman faculty member at any state university in the US. Mary Rippon was one of the university’s first three professors. She taught German at CU from 1878 to 1909 and was chair of the Department of Germanic Languages from 1881-1909. Students should submit a paper originally written for a graduate course in the previous calendar year (paper need not be written for a German course). Paper may be written in German or English. Paper cannot exceed 20 double-spaced pages, including notes and bibliography. Students may revise the paper before submitting it to the contest. Students may submit one essay. Award is $300. Papers should be submitted to the Graduate Advisor by April 1. George Scherer Travel Scholarship
Scholarships to support students for travel to conferences, internships, research or study abroad. Scholarship is in memory of Professor George A.C. Scherer, former Professor of Germanic languages at CU-Boulder. Professor Scherer also served as chair of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures and was director of the Academic Year Institute for Teachers of German and the summer Modern Language Institute. Applicants should submit a one-page request describing the project and an estimated budget by September 15 (fall travel) or February 1 (spring/summer travel). Late applications will be accepted if funding is still available. Graduate School Travel Grant: The Graduate School offers partial funding for graduate students to present research findings at meetings or conferences outside Colorado. The Graduate School provides a travel grant of $300 for domestic conferences and $500 for international conferences. http://www.colorado.edu/VCResearch/awards.html.
