Helga Luthers’ research interests include Nordic cinema with a specific focus on the smaller, diasporic cinemas (Icelandic, Faroese, Greenlandic, and Sami), Hollywood as a contagious force, position of national cinemas in the global era, and the relationship between film production, cultural politics, and economics. In her current research project, Helga explores Isaac Julien’s representations of the North in his film installations.

Helga has designed courses in contemporary Nordic literature and film, and the Nordic sources of J.R.R. Tolkien. In addition, she teaches a course on the medieval Icelandic Sagas, as well as a Maymester intensive in Nordic mythology with web-based research projects. Helga also routinely teaches discussion-based seminars at the Herbst Humanities Program for Engineers, and enjoys bringing together the different disciplines.

Helga is the coordinator for the Program’s Nordic Film Series, a co-adviser for the Nordic Club, and the contact person for studies in Iceland.
