GSLL offers the following study abroad opportunities for our students:
Study Abroad in Regensburg, Germany
This year 13 CU students are studying in Bavaria on CU’s exchange with the
University of Regensburg. A city of approximately 150,000 inhabitants,
Regensburg is known for its beautiful setting on the banks of the Danube.
Around 90 AD a Roman fort was erected near Regensburg, and in 179 AD “Castra Regina”
was founded here during the reign of Emperor Marcus Aurelius. Sights in
Regensburg include the famous Stone Bridge (Steinerne Brücke) from the
twelfth century, as well as Regensburg’s cathedral, which dates from the
fourteenth century and is the most important Gothic structure in Bavaria.
Many students on the CU exchange live in dormitories in the heart of
the historic city center, close to shops, restaurants, and cafes and
an easy commute to the university. Now in its thirty-eighth year, the
exchange offers students a wide variety of course offerings, from
intermediate and advanced German language courses to regular university
courses taken by German university students. Students can receive
credit toward a German major or minor, toward majors and minors in
other subject areas, and for CU core and general elective requirements.
Students are eligible for financial aid while they are on the exchange,
and scholarships are also available. Program director Steve Uppendahl
(himself a Regensburg exchange alum) directs the program on-site, and his
duties include arranging housing, giving students academic advising, and
organizing excursions to cities such as Vienna and Weimar.

Study Abroad in Berlin, Germany
The Freie Universität Berlin Internationale Sommer Universität (FUBiS) offers all levels of German language, in addition to German culture and literature courses taught in either German or English. Two summer terms (June to mid-July and mid-July to mid-August) are offered, and students may enroll in either or both terms. Students enrolling in both summer terms will be able to spend the equivalent of almost a semester in Berlin. For more information, contact Ann Schmiesing(Ann.Schmiesing@Colorado.Edu).
From a current student studying abroad...
My study abroad year in Germany is off to a wonderful start! Before I go into detail I would like to thank the German Department for their continued support. This opportunity certainly would not have been possible without guidance from both the faculty and staff.
I originally sought out this opportunity as a means to achieve a level of fluency that I had once only dreamed of. It hasn't taken me long to realize that I can accomplish a plethora of other things while improving my German at the same time. I am participating in a graduate level seminar that I am hopeful will generate some more ideas for my master's thesis. I also joined an international theater group that meets once a week to rehearse a play, Dr. med. Hiob Prätorius, which we will perform at the end of the year. I have even found time to explore some Bavarian traditions, such as the delicacy Schneeballen in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Simply delicious!
I am really looking forward to the next nine months and the many more culinary, linguistic, and cultural adventures that I am sure to encounter!

Study Abroad in St. Petersburg, Russia
In summer 2008 Artemi Romanov took eleven CU students to St. Petersburg, Russia, for the 6-week summer program at St. Petersburg State University. The annual summer programs in St. Petersburg began in 1997 and more than 130 CU students have participated to date.
The goal of the program is to offer beginning, intermediate and advanced students of Russian a well-balanced program of intensive language and cultural studies in an immersion setting. Combining rigorous language courses with an enriching cultural program of lectures and local excursions in St. Petersburg, one of the worlds most culturally and historically interesting cities, helped to achieve this goal.
This summer our major field trips included the following:
May 19 - Bus tour of St. Petersburg
May 21 - Hermitage museum: guided tour
May 24 - Peter and Paul Fortress
May 25 - Russian Ethnography Museum, Pushkin Apartment
May 28 - Tour to Pavlovsk Palace and Gardens
May 31 - Russian Museum
June 4 - Boat Tour: Rivers and Canals
June 8 - June 10: Cruise to Valaam island, tour of Valaam monastery
June 11 - Bus tour to Pushkin, Elizabeth palace, Alexander Palace and Cameron Gallery
June 12 - Bus tour to Novgorod, Yuriev Monastery, Museum of Wooden Architecture
June 14 - St. Isaac Cathedral, Museum of Religion
June 18 - Hydrofoil tour to Peterhof Palace and Water Gardens
June 20 - June 23: Trip to Moscow by train. Bus tour, Kremlin tour, Tretiakov gallery, WW II Museum.
The group also visited other museums in St. Petersburg and Moscow,
attended several ballet and opera performance in the Mariinskii,
Mikhailovsky and other theaters, attended classical concerts.
For the first time GSLL has financially supported two Russian majors
who went to St. Petersburg. Justin Carlton and Karina Pulec won
Russian Study Abroad Scholarships. Justin also did a very good job
at assisting program director in monitoring participants in St. Petersburg
and maintaining contact with them over the cell phone. He was also prepared
to take over in case of a medical emergency with the program director. I hope
to be able to have someone like Justin as an emergency assistant next year.
Summer Program in Reykjavík, Iceland
Last summer, Dr. Helga Luthers took her first group of 10 students to Iceland
to study contemporary Nordic society and culture. During two busy but fun
weeks they visited museums and galleries, spent a day at a geothermal research
park, explored the site of earliest known settlement in Iceland as well as the
medieval saga manuscripts, and took a monster-truck tour to the glacier of Langjökull
to name but a few of the activities.
The program turned out to be a great success and Helga is already planning next
summer’s excursions, adding visits to CCP, the makers of EVE Online, and a
fieldtrip to the sustainable community at Sólheimar.
