Student News: Awards and Honors

The Grace van Sweringen Baur Scholarship

Two of our MA students, Stephanie Rapp and Emily Smith, are studying at the University of Regensburg in the academic year 2008/2009. Stephanie is focusing on German postmodernism, and Emily’s work has been directed towards understanding bilingualism in language classrooms. Their studies there are supported in part by competitive Grace van Sweringen Baur Fellowships, in honor of Grace van Sweringen Baur, one of the first German professors at CU, and offered with the generous support of the Baur family.

Lucile Berkeley Buchanan Undergraduate Essay Prize

The German Program announced the first annual Lucile Berkeley Buchanan Undergraduate Essay Prize in spring of 2008. The prize is named after Lucile Berkeley Buchanan, an academically gifted German major who, in 1918, became the first female black student to graduate from CU. The CU German Program was proud to honor Buchanan’s academic and personal achievements by awarding Kayla Berg, one of our German majors, this prize at graduation in May 2008.

Delta Phi Alpha German Honor Society

At our May 2008 graduation ceremony we inducted Kelly Bendelow, Caelen Cann, Stephanie Chapman, David Eason, Anastasia Griffin, Lena Heilmann, Erin Hollingsworth, Chell Mann, and Mary Young into Delta Phi Alpha, the National German Honor Society at CU Boulder. Students are eligible to join Delta Phi Alpha after they have completed four semesters of college level German, or if they possess equal fluency. Students must also have an average GPA of 3.3 or higher in their German courses and an overall GPA of 2.7.

Dobro Slovo Slavic Honor Society

Congratulations to the following students elected to the Dobro Slovo Slavic Honor Society at the University of Colorado: Lauren Crooks, Julie Dyer, Timothy Hudson, Kathryn Palan, Brandon Rodriguez, Melissa Sauer, Adrian Sawczyn, and Mary Young. Recognized at our May graduation ceremony, these students have completed two years of study of Slavic Languages, literature, culture or related subjects with a minimum average grade of 85% or equivalent. They have also maintained a minimum overall academic average of 80% or equivalent and have indicated an active and continuing interest in Slavic languages, literature, culture or related fields of Slavic studies.

Eaton Award for Excellence

Kelly Bendelow, German major, was presented the Eaton Award for Excellence at our May graduation. This award is presented by the Center for Humanities and the Arts and recognizes outstanding undergraduate students.

Leonard and Anna Fair Scholarship and Award in Modern Foreign Languages

Allison Gibbs and Lydia Van Vleet, German majors, have been awarded the Leonard and Anna Fair Scholarship and Award in Modern Foreign Languages, respectively. These scholarships were established by Dr. Jeane Delcine Fair in loving memory of her parents, Leonard Augustus Fair and Anna Brady Rhodes. Jeane received a bachelor's degree in romance languages, magna cum laude, from the University of Colorado at Boulder; she also earned M.A. and Ph.D. degrees and taught for 32 years. Recipients are selected by a committee appointed by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Cliff Hall Memorial Scholarship

The Cliff Hall Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Tiffany Ching and Trevor Johnson, both German majors. This scholarship is in memory of Professor Clifton (Cliff) Hall. Professor Hall was a German professor in our department for 30 years and was also director of the Regensburg Program in Germany in 1970-71 and 1978-79. Professor Hall was an avid outdoorsman and especially loved fishing. He is remembered by many for sharing his love and knowledge of the outdoors with faculty, staff, and students of GSLL on numerous departmental hikes.

Max Kade Graduate Fellowship

The German Graduate Program awarded two Max Kade Graduate Fellowships for the 2008-2009 academic year. Damon Roberts and Stefanie Gibbs were selected as recipients of these fellowships. The Foundation was endowed by Dr. Max Kade, who immigrated to NY in 1905. After a successful career as a pharmaceutical researcher and entrepreneur, Dr. Kade became a philanthropist. Thanks are due to the Max Kade Foundation and President/Treasurer Lya Friedrich Pfeifer, J.D., for their support of our program and our students.

Katherine Jacob Lamont Scholarship

Two students were awarded the Katherine Jacob Lamont Scholarship this year. Congratulations to Brenda Black, German major, and Gavin Wolny, Russian major. The Katherine Jacob Lamont Scholarship was established on bequest of Katherine J. Lamont and is awarded based on merit to students studying in the Humanities. Students are selected by a committee appointed by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Mary Rippon Graduate Essay Prize

In spring 2008, the German graduate program awarded the first annual Mary Rippon Essay Prize to two German graduate students: to Brenda Black for her essay “Structures of Space and Time in Benjamin’s ‘Der Erzähler’” and to Jerome Bolton for his essay “Can Theodor Adorno’s Cultural Criticisms Apply to Authentic Jazz Works?” The prize is named after Mary Rippon, one of CU’s first faculty members and the first woman to be a professor at a public university in the US. Professor Rippon taught at CU from 1878 to 1909 and was chair of the Department of Germanic Languages from 1881 to 1909.

George S. Scherer Travel Scholarship

German MA student Petra Watzke was awarded a George Scherer Travel Scholarship to support travel to two academic conferences in fall 2008. Petra presented a paper at the European Studies Conference in Omaha, and participated in a poster session at the annual conference of Women in German in Snowbird, Utah. Stephanie Rapp and Emily K. Smith were also awarded George A. C. Scherer Travel Scholarships for the 2008-2009 academic year, used for their study abroad in Regensburg. George Scherer Travel Scholarships support students for travel to conferences, internships, research or study abroad. The scholarship is in memory of Professor George A. C. Scherer, who was a beloved professor of Germanic languages at CU-Boulder, chair of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, and director of the Academic Year Institute for Teachers of German and the summer Modern Language Institute.

Schevchenko Wittenberg Prize

Congratulations to Melissa Sauer, Russian major, who was awarded the Elizabeth Schevchenko Wittenberg Prize. This prize is intended to recognize an outstanding graduating Russian major. Elizabeth Wittenberg received her master’s degree in Slavic Languages from the University of Colorado in 1964 and taught here for about 10 years

Gunnél Thorsin-Hamm Memorial Scholarship

William Hall, Ethan Hart, and Warren Lautz, Nordic Studies minors and students, were awarded the Gunnél Thorsin-Hamm Memorial Scholarship for study in Sweden. The fund for this award was given by Miles Hamm in memory of his wife, Gunnél Thorsin-Hamm, who taught courses in the Nordic Studies Program for twenty years until her retirement in 1995. Congratulations to all four students.
