Advisory Board Bio's

Your University of Colorado Department of Geological Sciences Advisory Board is a diverse group of Geoscience Professionals who share one common interest: The quality of your education at C.U.and their desire to further your development into the next generation of Geoscience Professionals. To that end the Advisory Board wishes to establish an open door policy with the CU Geology Department Undergraduate and Graduate Student Body; to share their professional knowledge and experience and provide perspective to students on carrier opportunities and the academic and work experience choices to enable future employment in a desired field.

The following Advisory Board Members have volunteered to serve as advisors and mentors. These individual are interested in your academic and career ambitions and are eager to share their knowledge and experience with you. Their names and contact information are listed under the umbrella of their Professional Industry affiliation. Ben Lowry
e-mail: Ben.lowry@gmail.com
work phone 303-297-9005, ext. 212
Professional Affiliation: Project Geologist and GIS Specialist, Water Management Consultants, A Schlumberger Company

Academic Background: I attended CU geology from 2000-2004, I graduated on Thursday and was working on Friday, thanks in a very large part to contact I made on this very advisory Board. I am a hydrogeologist working down in Denver for the past three years. I have worked in Colorado, Wyoming, Arizona, New Mexico for field work and worked on projects that are based in Iran, Peru, Ecuador, Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Australia. While I was in school, I took awesome rafting trips with Joe Smyth, blazed around the West with Chuck, Alan Lester and others, and went on caving trips under the guidance of Fred Luizer (sometimes he was there with us, sometimes he just gave us great cave beta). I love the department and really think it grants some great opportunities to have a small college experience in a large university.

Please feel free to contact me about working after an undergrad degree at CU. I have a unique perspective on the board about a recent graduates search for a job and what happens after you get that job. I am also happy to take groups caving, do career nights, or recommend geologically themed movies to anyone interested.

Professional background: Between my bachelors and masters I worked on a geophysics crew collecting magneto-telluric data all over the western U.S.  Since graduation from CU, I have worked in the environmental, mining and water resource sectors. Most of my work relates to water and water chemistry, be it groundwater investigations, environmental remediation, groundwater resources, mine waste rock, or groundwater modeling. I have worked at mines (coal, gold, silver, zinc, copper), refineries, nuclear weapons facilities, factories, landfills, military bases, fuel storage facilities, oil fields, smelters, and even a rocket plant. Most of my work these days is with mining clients in Mexico..
