Encouraging active learning - provide either original online material or link to existing online material and then have students answer questions regarding the material they've just read. Then have students email their responses to the instructor. In the document with the questions, provide your email address so students can ask questions if they're having trouble with the assignment. As an example, I had students do an on line assignment after reading the Illustrated Glossary of Alpine Glacial Landforms I created. They didn't email me their responses, but many of the students had problems with the assignment and emailed me for help while they were working on the assignment. This provided timely feed back to the students (another principle) because I check and respond to student email at least twice a day. It also let me know what modifications I need to make to the assignment. In the URL provided, from the contents page, link to the exercise.
