Yes, very helpful ideas here Sarah and others - thanks. I too had problems making the student-generated web sites useful in terms of helping them master course content. This semester I had students work in weekly collaborative groups to do regional maps based on course concepts and themes. They each individually were asked to bring in a "web site of the week" to provide information needed to do their particular map assignment. This really helped a lot. I think the key is to be as specific as possible, teach students show to evaluate the accuracy and quality of their site, and work web sites into a point-driven assignment in some way.
Other ideas?
