regarding ken's question as to where to begin with
collaborative projects for the workshop: at this
point i have a few general ideas that are linked
to my specific needs; how these relate to the
broader goals of the workshop and virtual dept.
needs to be worked out:
- creation of basic mapping and gis modules for
intro to maps and gis course: my idea is to
attempt to use existing www based mapping and
gis sites (such as the toxic waste inventory,
or the census thematic mapping site); work on
"modules" would consist of concepts and
instructions which utilize these existing sites.
anyone done anything like this yet? are existing
sites sufficiently flexible to be useful?
- creation of similar modules using something
like java or mapobjects or arcview (assuming
access to the mapobjects and arcview internet
extensions). this would entail more work (and
programming). anyone working with these tools?
are they work all the extra effort and cost
(the internet extensions to esri products are
not cheap)?
- finally, i know we are focusing on college and
university education, but i also need basic map
and gis educational materials for a community gis
project i am starting in inner city buffalo. i
hope to have some basic www mapping and gis
working for this neighborhood (dealing with
housing conditions, prostitution problems,
drugs, etc.). i have no idea if materials aimed
at college students can be useful for teaching
the general public (and in this case residents
of these neighborhoods) what they need to use
and understand basic mapping and gis. any ideas?
is the virt geog dept broad enough to encompass
such applications?
so this does not specifically answer the question
as to what modules to develop (eg., on choropleth
mapping, color symbolization, basic gis overlay,
etc.) but is as far as i have gotten in my
thinking right now...
