A WHEELCHAIR TOUR OF
CENTRAL CAMPUS
Sensitivity Training Exercise for
Discussion of Disability, Environment, and
Perception
To get the most out of our discussion of disability and environment you must
develop a sensitivity to the problems posed by architectural and environmental
barriers. This can be accomplished by means of a two hour solo tour of central
campus in a wheelchair. I have rented a wheelchair for your use during the next
two weeks. It can be checked out from the Geography office during regular
business hours (8-12 am and 1-5 pm). Sign up sheets will be circulated in class so
you can plan your excursion in advance. After leaving the Geography Building, I
wish to have you visit five other UT buildings. You can visit them in any order
you choose. Listed below are tasks for you to complete and questions for you to
answer as you visit the buildings. Never step out of the wheelchair as you travel
about campus searching for these answers. Warning: the levers attached to the
frame are not brakes. They are wheel locks to be used when the wheelchair is at
rest.
1) The Texas Union How many iced tea dispensers are there in the union
cafeteria?
2) The Main Building: Pick up a campus map at the information desk. What is
the inscription carved into the wall to the immediate right of the circulation desk in
the Life Science Library?
3) Perry-Castaneda Library: Use the on-line catalog to look up one of the
volumes listed in appendix 8. Find this book in the stacks. Copy the title page of
the book and bring it to class.
4) Gregory Gym Who were the Intramural women's fencing champions in 1986-
87?
5) The College of Business Administration Atrium (Speedway entrance) Who
contributed the antique "sculpture" found in the atrium?
