How to Make Online Maps with DDViewer

The online mapping software we will use is Demographic Data Viewer (it is provided by CIESIN (Consortium for International Earth Science Information Network)), with funding from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Goddard Flight Space Center under contract NAS5-32632 for the Development and Operation of the Socioeconomic Data and Applications Center).

DDViewer comes in three versions:

Non-Java Edition v2.0
Java Edition v2.0
Java Edition v3.0

In this project we will use Java Edition v2.0.  It is not quite as easy to use as v3.0 but it makes maps at four levels of geography (county, county subdivision, census tract, census blockgroup), whereas v3.0 only maps at two levels of geography (county, census tract).  We will be making maps at the county and county subdivision scales.   If your browser or computer is not java-enabled, the non-java edition v2.0 is acceptable.
