List and Contents of Your Five Graphic Documents

 

Document 1 (2x3 grid)

 
a 2x3 grid: top row has 2 maps, middle row has 2 charts, and bottom row has 2 text boxes of statistical information
 
the grid should fit in one Microsoft Word page, and the maps and charts should be visible in one screen
 
if all three rows are placed in one screen, the maps and charts become difficult to read, so the text boxes should be on the page, but off the screen, where they can reached by scrolling 
if your county is taller than it is wide, use Word's portrait view
if your county is wider than it is tall, use Word's landscape view
here's an example
subject: the spatial distribution of income in your county, with reference to how it compares to the state as a whole
variable name and census category (these are obtained by clicking the "Select variables" button in DDViewer's Java window)
 
pci--income
census geography: county map = county subdivision, state map = county
map titles: Per Capita Income for both 
adjust the legends as necessary
layout: position the map of your county in the upper left hand corner, position the map of your state in the upper right hand corner
both maps should be evenly sized and spaced
 
the maps can be evenly sized by placing one image on top of another and then making adjustments
both charts should be evenly sized and spaced
both text boxes should be evenly sized and spaced
 

Document 2 (2x3 grid)

 
subjects: population pattern and connections between population and per capita income maps
variable names and census categories (these are obtained by clicking the "Select variables" button in DDViewer's map window)
 
pci--income
totpop--population
census geography: county subdivision
map titles: Per Capita Income and Total Population
adjust the legends as necessary
layout: Per Capita Income (position the map of your county in the upper left hand corner), population map (upper right hand corner)
adjust the size and space of the maps, charts, and text boxes as noted in the Document 1 instructions


 

Document 3 (2x3 grid)

 
subjects: population pattern and connections between population and per capita income maps
 
press the "Select Variables" button in the Java Applet window and select a variable from the population category
choose a variable that is derivative (i.e., a percentage) not absolute 
 
the difference between derivative or relative values compared to absolute values is shown here
select a variable that provides insight into the economic and social geography of your county
census geography: county subdivision
create a map title 
adjust the legend for the new map as necessary
layout: Per Capita Income (position the map of your county in the upper left hand corner), new map (upper right hand corner)
adjust the size and space of the maps, charts, and text boxes as noted in the Document 1 instructions
 

Document 4 (2x3 grid)

 
subjects: education pattern and connections between education and per capita income maps
 
press the "Select Variables" button in the Java Applet window and select a variable from the education category
follow Document 3 instructions


 

Document 5 (2x3 grid)

 
subjects: housing pattern and connections between housing and per capita income maps
 
press the "Select Variables" button in the Java Applet window and select a variable from the housing category
follow Document 3 instructions
