GEOG 6160: Professional and Career Development Issues
Preparing for a Career in
Higher Education
This seminar focuses
on issues important in the first years of a faculty career from
graduate school to tenure. Stress is placed on strategies for
balancing research, teaching, service, and personal life to achieve
success and satisfaction. Topics addressed include
good practice in designing and using learning materials; understanding
the job-search and hiring process; grant writing; publishing;
formulating a professional
development plan; creating teaching portfolios; understanding the role
of ethics and values in teaching and research; and managing time and
stress. Schedules to be offered in Spring 2008.
