HOW TO SCAN A
PICTURE AND SAVE IT TO DISK
informal tutorial
Scanning
a picture is a very easy thing. In this tutorial the instructions refer to the
HP scanner in KESDA, but most scanners out there use the same logic behind it.
STEP
1
The
first thing you need to do is to put you picture in the scanner bed (just like
you do for a photocopy).
STEP
2 (assuming the
scanner is on and properly connected)
From
the START button, choose HP ScanJet Software|HP PrecisionScan Pro
This
is the software that allows you to communicate with the scanner.

When
the software starts, the scanner warms up and almost immediately shows you a
preview of your picture.

Look
at the interface carefully, and you will notice different small information
windows.
In
the example above, the window shows how the image looks, the size of the
document (which is the image plus the background), color information, image
size (in bytes), and the quality setting for the scanner (set to “medium”).
STEP
3
In
this step we will customize the output image (the want you want to save).
The
first thing to do is to get rid of the extra “space” or white area around the
picture.
To
do this, simply draw a rectangle around your image. You will see a selection
box with
anchor
points (black squares) which allow you resize your bounding box.
Notice
how the white background disappeared and the document dimensions and image size
decreased.
You
could also select only a portion of your picture for example, just Lisa, Bart,
and Maggie.
Before
you save the image to your disk, be aware that there are other settings that
can be applied to the picture before scanning, most importantly those relating
to image resolution. For now we will keep the default quality setting in
“medium”, but we will address image size and manipulation in the next very-intro-Photoshop tutorial.
Step
4
The
last step is to SCAN your picture.
To
do this, simply choose SCAN|SAVE AS… and save to your disk.
