Creating a Homepage

Goals for Lab 1

1. Practice the steps of creating and publishing a personal homepage.  Go through the process of editing and republishing 5-6 times during lab.

2. Become familiar with basic features and interface of Dreamweaver and SSH.

3. Create a homepage with 3-5 links arranged as an ordered list, one freeware clipart graphic and, as time permits, one scanned graphic.

Be sure to bring one or more photos to lab next week so you can practice scanning and graphic preparation with PhotoShop.

Steps

1) Study the authoring cycle and watch demonstration.

On your local computer

Prepare files for publishing using authoring, graphics, animation and other software

Keep files organized in folders just as they will be organized on server

arrow SSH - A secure version of the File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is used to move needed files to the server.

Once online, always check that the files and all links are working as planned.

SSH can be downloaded for free from the CU OIT webpages.

On the WWW server: www.colorado.edu

Accessed through host: spot.colorado.edu

Username: cartpro

From the File Menu
Operation | Go to folder: /htdocs/geography/cartpro/cartography2/fall2011

The address for your homepage will be in this form, substituting your name for "foote":

http://www.colorado.edu/geography/cartpro/cartography2/fall2011/foote/foote.html.

2) Create simple text page, save to your memory stick and publish.  Create a folder using your last name (i.e, "foote") on your ZIP disk to hold all the files needed for their homepage.

3) Transfer your homepage using SSH.  Go slowly at first.  Your speed will increase with practice.  You must create a profile called "cartpro" in SSH to make it easier to use the computers in KESDA.  Instructions for using SSH can be found here.

4) Check your new homepage once you have moved it onto the server moved to server.

5) Add 3-5 links to other Websites, then re-publish page.

6) Change background color, try different fonts and sizes, numbered and unnumbered lists and re-publish page.

7) Find and download a permission-free graphic from the Web.  One of the best places to search is in US government sites like www.nasa.gov, www.usgs.gov, or www.noaa.gov, because the US government materials are copyright free, though you still need to cite them as the source.  Sites like http://www.gifworld.com or http://www.clipart.com are sometimes free and sometimes charge subscriptions.  You might search for free clipart using google.com.  Save one small graphic into your local "foote" homepage folder.  Then move the graphic to their folder on the server and copy its URL

8) Add the clipart to the homepage by using the file's URL.

9) Practice scanning photos and other graphics.  Open scanned images in Photoshop, and export to GIF, JPG, PNG.

10) Move this graphic file to the server and copy its URL

11) Insert the graphics file's URL into homepage and republish homepage on the server
