Room Policies

Code of Conduct

The primary purpose of the KESDAL is that of a teaching lab. All students are expected to use the lab in such a way that the ability of others to work in the lab is in no way infringed. Headphones are recommended for personal radios, cassette players, and CD players. Animals and bicycles are not allowed in the room. Students are required to cleanup their work area for the next person (i.e removal of trash). PLEASE HELP KEEP THE LAB CLEAN!!

Hours

The lab is accessible to eligible students whenever the building is open, and there is no class in session. If a class is in session the professor or the teaching assistent has the right to ask you to leave. This policy is designed to improve the teaching/learning environment of the lab not to inhibit anyone's access. Students enrolled in techniques courses, will be issued a personal door code that is required to open the lab door. The lab door is no longer left open for security reasons.

Reservations

The lab may be reserved by faculty and graduate students for presentations and demonstrations. Requests should be sent by electronic mail to the Lab Manager. Advance notice of special closings will be posted in the lab and on the "Message of the Day" for UNIX users.

Door Codes

All students registered for classes using the lab will be issued a personal code for the door to KESDA Lab. This code will allow students to enter the lab during weekends and at other times when it is not staffed. Students should not share this code with anyone. When the code is used to enter the room, it is recorded by the lock. If any hardware or other materials are missing from the lab, a list of codes used to enter the lab will be printed out. The student who last entered the lab may be responsible for any missing equipment. Door codes are removed at the end of each semester for all course students.

Leaving the Lab

If a student leaves the lab, after official hours, when there are no other persons working in the lab, they must be sure to lock all windows, pull the blinds, and to close the door. We actively track room users, so please do your part to maintain room security.

Projection System

There is a high resolution projection system designed to work with the existing computers, laptops, television and VCR.

Documentation Cabinet

In the northeast corner of the lab is a locked cabinet. Documentation for all of the software used in this lab may be found in the cabinet. Keys to the cabinet may be obtained by asking your Teaching Assistant or one of the Lab Managers. One is also located in the Cartography Lab (Room 8). If a student needs any reference materials from the cabinet, they may be signed out through one of the above mentioned people. Materials are not to leave the room!

Phone

There is a phone available in the lab for short, local, outgoing phone calls. This phone is an extension of the phone located next door in the Cartography Lab. Please check to be sure that no one else is using the line before you dial. If this privilege is abused, the phone will be removed.

Additional Facilities

Currently, there is one white board located on the east wall of the lab. Markers for the board may be found in the documentation cabinet. Please do not use the white board to leave messages. On the south side of the lab there are several drafting tables available for laying out paper maps. Please try to keep this area neat.

Advising and Assistance

Although there is not an advisor on duty in the lab at all times, help will be available from a variety of sources other than the Teaching Assistants for the lab courses. The lab manager or one of the assistents may be in the lab. Their pictures are posted in the lab, however they may be in disguise, so seek them out and bug them, after all, they get paid. Check the schedule by the entrance to the lab to determine when other advisors will be available. Student advisors will generally have a sign (usually a little colored pyramid) above their computer indicating that they are the advisor on duty.

Lab Manager

In combination with the Computing and Network Services group, the Geography Department employs one graduate student half-time as the lab manager. The lab manager is responsible for the technical management of the computers, overseeing the lab, and for coordinating with lab instructors and teaching assistants. The lab managers hours are posted in the lab and should be available for technical help during those times. Any malfunctions of software or hardware should be reported to the lab manager in person if possible or send e-mail to the lab manager.

Computers

Presently there are 30 Del Precision 340 workstations. 2+gighrz, 500ram, 40gig hd, CD-RW, zip & diskette drives, flat screen monitors. All units are on 100T ethernet connections.
