35 people were arrested and several hurt after two riots over the weekend of May 2-4. The violence began just before midnight Friday, when police were called to a block party at 14th Street and College Avenue. A crowd of 400 to 500 people were gathered around a bonfire in the middle of the street and greeted the police and squad cars with rocks and bottles.

More than 100 officers battled the crowd that swelled to more than 2,000 people by dawn. Early Sunday morning, as "last call" was served in the Hill's bars, patrons walked out to find a squad of police officers standing across the street. Threats were shouted, beer cans were tossed, and another clash broke out.

Sunday morning's crowd was estimated at 500 people, 75 percent of them students. Damage estimates from the two nights topped $300,000.
