The field study begins on the University of Colorado - Boulder campus near the underpass at College and Broadway. Broadway is a major north-south thoroughfare that separates the Univeristy of Colorado on the east from the University Hill District on the west. Please proceed to a point near the campus-side of the underpass.
Stop 1 - University of Colorado campus near Broadway underpass
(1) Describe the built environment of the University of Colorado campus. What does the campus architecture and landscaping convey to you? How do you know you are on a university campus?
(2) The City of Boulder prides itself for being progressive on environmental matters such as energy conservation. How does the built environment in this location reflect Boulder's pro-environment policies?
Please proceed through the underpass and up the steps to just outside the Colorado Bookstore.
Stop 2 - Corner of 14th St. and College Ave.
(1) Walk up the north side of the street to 1305 College Ave. What is located here? Go inside the establishment. Describe the sorts of items on sale and the people shopping there.
(2) Cross over to the south side of the block and enter the shopping mall on the corner. What sort of businesses are located inside? Describe who is inside and what people are doing there.
(3) Leave the mall and proceed to 1352 College Ave. What is located here? Go inside the establishment. Describe the sorts of items on sale and the people shopping there.
(4) Observe the businesses on both sides of the street. How many of these establishments are locally-owned as opposed to being part of a national chain?
(5) Write a brief description of the Hill commercial district based on your observations. Are businesses here dependent on any particular segment of the local Boulder community? Please comment.
