Carol Conzelman
is a Ph.D. student in cultural anthropology
studying participatory democracy in
the Nor Yungas of Bolivia in relation
to national trends toward global market
integration and alternative development.
This Aymara peasant farming region
is where coca is legally grown for
domestic onsumption (not for the cocaine
trade), and thus presents unique possibilities
for conflict and ollaboration. Her
DART fellowship funded two weeks of
research in Washington, DC, to ascertain
"the view of Bolivia from Washington"
from economists, government officials,
development consultants, activists,
and a variety of scholars with experience
in Bolivia.
