Putting together reading packets for classes / copyright issues

I.                    Reading packets

A.    include

1.                  title page

2.                  disclaimer (see below)

3.                  outline (otherwise less useful after class over)

4.                  overall page numbers (often hand-written)

5.                  coordinated with class

a.       outline of readings /lecture topic

b.      incl. copy of some course materials (e.g. syllabus)

B.     well-organized / progression of themes

1.                  thematic categories (sometime separated by blank piece of colored paper)

2.                  organization explained in introductory page, etc.

C.    quality of reproduced articles (etc.): functional?

D.    range of articles (i.e. not just academic journals)

E.     if possible: use better binding: longer-lasting

II.                 copyright issues

A.    disclaimer right in front: “intended only for sale to students of Geog.____ for Spring 2003 at CU, (etc.)” (or) “the following articles are reprinted with permission…”

B.     copied by: ____ Copy Shop

C.    make sure each entry is clearly referenced

III.               Group suggestions/experiences

A.    Using the bookstore to print readers

1.                  they determine copyright costs

2.                  make an appt. & go in with:

a.       all the materials to be copied

b.      a list of all the copyrights

3.                  keep in mind that some articles/books’ copyrights are more expensive (especially if out of print)

B.     reading packets: paper v. online??

1.                  paper

a.       can put exercises in packet to be turned in

b.      better for as resrouce to be used in future

c.       keeps all materials together

d.      copyright costs are clearly manifest in reader cost

e.       image quality may be poor

2.                  online

a.       don’t have to be finished before semester begins

b.      convenient / quick / flexible

c.       copyright issues may be more complicated

d.      copyright costs: how can they be deferred to students?

e.       can use online links (increasingly available)

f.        can eventually be turned into paper reader once ‘perfected’
