Administering FCQ’s & assessing results

A.    guidelines

1.               provide pencils

2.               tell them it’s anonymous

3.               tell them to evaluate the lab/recitation & NOT the lecture/workbook

4.               show them that it’s 2-sided

5.               give at least 5-10 minutes

6.               stand outside room

B.    tips

1.               encourage students to give written, honest feedback

a.      constructive feedback..

b.     remind them that you won’t see results until next semester (after final grades already turned in)

2.               be positive, friendly as handing them out

3.               less is more

a.      FCQ’s are pretty self-explanatory

b.     don’t get carried away over-clarifying how to fill them in

4.               avoid giving out FCQ’s right after handing back graded material

5.               consider whether you’d prefer beginning vs. end of class

a.      beginning: may be better if students leave at different times (labs)

b.     end: may be better if you want to give a lot of time

III.             Assessing results (tips)

A.    it’s understood that 1st semester TAs typically get slightly lower FCQ’s

B.    determine what advice is constructive

1.               don’t take unconstructive comments personally..

2.               make notes of possible changes to incorporateànext time teaching

3.               re-read positive evaluations

C.    save FCQ’s in a file
