Update on Guatemala: GUATEMALA: O.A.S. CRITICISM Less than a month before presidential elections, the Organization of American States took the unusual step of directly criticizing last summer's mob violence by supporters of Efraín Ríos Montt, a former dictator and now a presidential candidate. The group said the July protests that led to the violence were meant to pressure judges who later approved Mr. Ríos Montt's candidacy despite a law that bars anyone who took power in a coup from serving as president. It also warned of growing dangers to rights, citing threats against activists, political murders and impotent law-enforcement groups that do not stop organized crime.---David Gonzalez (NYT)
