Exercise 6:  Modifying Human Behavior:

Driving Less in the Denver Metro Region

This is a group brainstorming session!  You can record group work on your individual recitation hand-in, or you can develop your own material after the brainstorming session.

So far we have mostly talked about human use of resources, and looked at how humans are changing earth environmental systems.  We have also touched on the “driving forces” behind human behavior (population growth, consumption, technology), but not much on actions meant to modify human behavior (regulation or education aimed at, for example, energy conservation).

So let’s brainstorm how we could modify a key human behavior that degrades the environment of the Front Range, Driving (individual automobiles used for all or most trips), which is a big use of energy, especially in the U.S., and a source of pollution. Build lists and explanations of actions that could reduce miles driven and/or the environmental impact of miles driven.  You will divide into groups, but each student should submit a separate report.

List as many specific but distinct approaches you can imagine,  and provide a brief explanation or definition of the policy and how it would work.

Exercise 10: Driving Less in Denver.

(1)       REGULATORY/MANDATED approaches (example, congestion pricing, or maybe all people driving alone in cars will be fined $1,000.), list and explain how your regulations would work:

(2)            Now list every EDUCATIONAL/AWARENESS approach you can imagine, and explain how they would reduce driving:

(3)       List changes in the URBAN SYSTEM and BUILT ENVIRONMENT that would reduce driving, perhaps without direct REGULATION or even EDUCATION, and explain how they would reduce driving:
