1) Read the historical overview of the European Union on page 359-360. In 1952, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg established the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC). Why did they decide to establish the ECSC at this time, and what the purpose of this organization?
2) In 1957, the Treaty of Rome was signed, establishing the European Economic Community (EEC). Give three reasons why Great Britain decided to stay outside the new EEC in your own words.

3) The European Economic Community (EEC) was established to create a Common Market. Describe in your own words what a common market is, and give some examples how a common market increased trade between member states of the EEC.
4) In 1967, the European Economic Community changed its name to European Community (EC). What did this name change indicate? Give some examples of organizational structures that were added to the union. Why is this important?
5) In 1991, the European Community changed its name to European Union, and expanded its goals with the Treaty of Maastricht. Give some examples of these expanded goals in your own words, and explain why each of these goals is important for European integration.

6) On January 1, 2002, twelve EU member states adopted a single monetary unit, the euro. Give two advantages for using the euro in your own words.

7) Denmark, Sweden and the United Kingdom have decided not to join the European Monetary Union (EMU)- they will not use the euro as their currency. Give two reasons why these countries have decided not to join the EMU.

8) In Norway, membership in the European Union was rejected twice by a national referendum. In 1994, 52.2% voted against membership in the EU, while 48.8 voted for joining the EU. After looking at your answers on the questions above, give 3 reasons why Norwegians would be in favor of EU membership, and 3 reasons why they would not want to join the EU.

9) Read page 362-367 in the textbook. Research the fiscal, political and social changes that must take place in Hungary and Poland before they are admitted to the EU. Discuss the costs versus the benefits of membership. Within each country, who will profit, and who might suffer?
10) After looking at your answers to the questions above, how do you think the European Union will evolve in the future? What kind of issues will the European Union deal with in the future?
